Detectives conduct follow-up criminal investigations on felony and misdemeanor crimes reported to the Coeur d'Alene Police Department. Typically, a uniformed officer responds to a call and prepares a police report. Reports requiring follow up are assigned to detectives in the Investigations Division. Cases are prioritized based upon suspect or lead information:
Priority 1: Cases that list a suspect(s) who may have committed the offense.
Priority 2: Cases that list a possible suspect(s) or evidence that points to a suspect
Priority 3: Cases that list no suspects or leads
Priority 1 & 2 cases will receive the full attention of detectives; however, Priority 3 cases (no suspects/leads) will remain inactive until suspect or lead information is available.
Once a case is prioritized, it is assigned to a detective for follow up action, often requiring many hours of investigation before an arrest is made or a case is closed.
